Floh #FridayFriends: Vinil Ramdev

What’s special about Floh is that it is a very strong and tightly knit community. In an attempt to spotlight those that make up this community, we introduce to you – Friday Friends!

Our dashing Floh #FridayFriend of the week is Vinil Ramdev.

Vinil has been an entrepreneur for over 12 years. He’s never had a real job. He started his entrepreneurial journey while in college and now runs a company that handles online marketing, product launches and promotions, and conducts workshops in sales and personal branding.

What’s your story?
I was born in Bangalore, went to school in Ooty for five years as a child. Then went to college in the US. Came back to India for a 10-day holiday 12 years ago, and never went back. I ended up starting a business right here in Bangalore.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I always wanted to be a professional athlete. I had ZERO doubt about that when I was a child. But coming from a typical South Indian family, academics was always most important. There were only two career choices as a child – either join the family business, or become a doctor or an engineer. Eventually, I didn’t choose either of these two options.

Take us through the journey of your career
I’ve never had a real job. The only jobs I had were part-time jobs in college like door-to-door selling, restaurant and retail jobs, campus security and a few internships. I started my first business in 2004 while I was in college, as more of a hobby than a business. Back then, setting up an e-commerce business was a big deal, because web technology was not as sophisticated as it is today. After some experimentation in the healthcare niche, from 2009, I’ve mostly been involved in providing marketing services.

What is your style quotient?
I like to keep things simple. I rarely wear any accessories. I like to add a dash of colour to whatever I wear. Now, I’m kind of experimenting with the minimalistic lifestyle. Let’s see how that works.

What is your tech peeve?
I liked the days of land lines. Our minds and lives were much more peaceful. These push notifications are getting a bit too hot to handle.

The book on your bedside right now.
The book that I want to read is Dalai Lama’s The Art of Happiness. I remember going through it 15 years ago, but never got around to reading it. Right now, I’m reading a book called Never Eat Alone. It’s a book about business networking.

The last movie that had you crying tears of laughter or made you very emotional.
Almost every movie about sports that I watch makes me emotional. Recently, I watched the movie MS Dhoni, the biopic. I liked it and it did make me emotional.

The restaurant you would like to go to for date night.
I like to do something different all the time. It could be a quiet dinner by the beach or a fancy night club, or even at a restaurant in Times Square.

What are the causes you care deeply about?
The environment. I lived in Bangalore when it was a green peaceful city. Today, I’m seeing trees and beautiful architecture being replaced by buildings that look like match boxes. Animal Rights. Some of the things I’ve been reading on social media is just atrocious. World peace? No, not really just kidding!

A fictional character that best represents you.
Superman? Just that I don’t jump off 10 storey buildings. But I do other stupid stuff that I shouldn’t be doing.

The place you would save up to travel to.
I’d rather live in a new place than just travel somewhere. I’ve never been a big fan of travelling but I like to live in new places. I’d like to live in a farm or a forest away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Or even a quiet beach would do.
